Liverpool’s chances of swiftly booking their place in the Champions League knockout stages were quashed by Atalanta last week.
The Reds produced a lacklustre display and were defeated 2-0 by the club from Bergamo.
The defeat means that Jurgen Klopp’s side only lead the group by two points and a defeat on Tuesday could knock them out of the qualifying spots.
However, a win or a draw would still see them reach the last 16 with a game to spare.
Ajax are currently enjoying a strong run of form having won their six games in all competitions.
Erik ten Hag’s side sit top of the Eredivisie and are second in Champions League group D.
They will be hoping that they can take advantage of Liverpool’s unpredictable form and replicate Atalanta’s result from last Wednesday.
Ajax and Atalanta could face off next week in what could effectively be a play-off match for a place in the knockout stages.
With Liverpool due to face bottom side Midtjyylland during the final round of games, even the Reds losing to Ajax would set up a crucial game next week.
