Sony slows downloads of Playstation consoles in Europe
Japan’s Sony, the consumer electronics maker, has announced it will slow PlayStation game downloads in Europe to help maintain overall internet speeds.
The company said that this change will not have a material impact on the multiplayer, who said they would “continue to have a strong gameplay.”, Noting that game downloads may be “somewhat slower or late” during this period.
While Sony was the first company to announce a restriction of the amount of data used by its games device during the outbreak of the Corona virus, a number of game broadcast services began similar practices last week. Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, Apple, Disney and others have begun to commit to restricting video quality in Europe in order to reduce the pressure on broadband networks.
The measures aim to help maintain strong internet speeds for everyone while the epidemic causes a sharp rise in people working at home.
Sony said it was working with European Internet service providers to “manage download traffic”, without going into details of how the download speeds have been reduced
